Quick Note
I thought I would make a quick post about how I reset the toner counters on my brother HL-3170CDW. I find myself having to search for these steps every few months.
The Request:
I love my brother HL-3170CDW printer (CLICK HERE). It performs great and always works for us. The one thing I do not like is buying toner cartridges…and I have yet to do so! I have owned this printer since August 13, 2013 and have yet to replace the toner even though I use it regularly. My current page count is a total 1,432 pages with 1,009 being color and 423 being monochrome and I am still using the starter cartridges that came with the printer. The brother spec sheet (CLICK HERE) states that the starter cartridges are good for 1,000 pages each, but I have been given the “Toner Low” error almost 3 times now.
The Solution:
The secret behind the continual use of the toner cartridges is the ability to reset the counters so the printer thinks the cartridges are new again. I will continue to do this until print quality decreases. Below are the steps to reset the counters. I always reset all cartridges…just to save myself time.
- Open the top lid of the printer and leave ajar.
- Press and hold the “Secure” and “X Cancel” buttons.
- Use the arrow keys to select the cartridge model you would like to reset and press “OK”.
- Press the UP arrow to reset the cartridge.
- Once reset is selected you will see “ACCEPTED” on the screen.
After you perform the reset for the needed cartridges just close the printer lid and hit “X Cancel” to exit back to the main menu. DONE! From time to time I also use the cartridge sliders to clean the wires and preventative maintenance to keep the printer running in good shape.
Thanks!
I would like to say thank you to the following resources:

FYI, firmware version 1.08 dated 15.05.26 seems to work. I can scroll through a variety of values. This is from a new printer installed today and getting familiar with the unit.
And I agree, so far the printer seems okay for everything 8½—11, but still wishing I could find a reasonably priced and easy to maintain 11×17 color laser. The only caveat so far is that it does pick up the pre-printed information from my checks.

Hi,
Thank you very much for this. I found that if the printer stops in the middle of a job because it’s “out of toner,” it is necessary to cancel the print job before it will allow you to reset the printer.

I finally got this to work, thank you. Problem was, on STEP 2, you did NOT make it clear whether we should continue to hold down the “Secure” and “X Cancel” buttons through STEP 3. You just said “hold” them. What does “hold” them mean–for HOW LONG???
I finally figured out that we were NOT supposed to continue to hold them through Step 3, and it worked.
Thanks.

What a beautiful piece of breathtakingly simple information. I take this model of printer home from my work office because they couldn’t get it to run properly. A free printer, fixed by pressing 4 buttons.
I’m crying. Thank you!

Well hell, thanks for saving my sanity. I had replaced an HL-3170 CDW (bad board) and out of greed I kept the existing drums and toners. When the first one emptied I went ahead and picked up the unused (and still sealed) unit that shipped with the new printer. It kept insisting that the toner was empty, and this is an unused drum and toner set. Your reset procedure worked beautifully.
Thanks so much for the tip!

I can’t believe that worked. I can’t tell you how many toner cartridges I have replaced the last couple of years. Could not believe they were already dry.
Thank you so much for this simple hack

Worked for me. THANK YOU.
Brother has been sued over this toner BS and yet they are still at their games.

This is no longer working on my HL-L3270CDW. It used to work fine. I am able to get the reset menu up and select which cartridge and yield I want to reset (black) and it comes up with accepted. But the cartridge doesn’t appear to have been reset at all. It still shows empty and won’t print.
I tried experimenting and resetting the colour cartridges even though they didn’t need it. All 3 colours showed about 2 thirds full. Again, I got in to the reset menu without too much of a problem and got the accepted message when selecting the cartridge and yield I wanted to reset. The toner level bars still showed them as 2 thirds full as they were before I tried a reset.
I don’t know if this has something to do with a firmware upgrade. I couldn’t tell you which version it is because I am away from work right now but I do know it is the latest.

Hello Dan, no problem it works correctly, I am using the latest version 1.28.2.0 from Brother
But how do you see that the cartridge is really empty, isn’t it dangerous for the printer?

Works great on a Brother HL-L8350CDW laser printer! I had to close and reopen the front a couple times before the holding two keys part entered into toner select mode, but it finally worked and I was able to reset the toner cartridge!
I feel like I owe you a six pack. :)
